Giovanni Battista Velluti war einer der letzten legendären Kastraten, die im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert das Opernleben dominiert hatten. Velluti verbrachte seine Karriere jedoch fast ausschließlich in der Epoche der Romantik und sang die Musik seiner Zeit. Sein Stil der Verzierung stieß auf breite Bewunderung und setzte Maßstäbe für die Primedonne, die in Opern von Komponisten wie Rossini, Bellini und Donizetti als Stars ihrer Zeit auftauchten.

von der New York Times als "ein männlicher Sopran mit einer atemberaubenden Gabe'' beschrieben, studierte am Millsaps College (Prof. MacCarrell Ayers), an der Boston University School for the Arts (Ks. Prof. Richard Cassilly) und vollendete seine Gesangsausbildung an der Manhattan School of Music (Prof. Charles Bressler). 2017 schloss er seine Promotion in historische Musikwissenschaft an der Boston University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences mit der Arbeit "Giambattista Velluti in London, 1825-1829: Literary Constructions of the Last Operatic Castrato" ab.

Crowe war der erste männlicher Sopran, der den Metropolitan Opera Wettbewerb als nationaler Preisträger für sich entscheiden konnte. Sein professionelles Operndebüt gab er an der Des Moines Metro Opera als Cherubino. Er ist bereits auf vielen Opernbühnen in den Vereinigten Staaten und in Europa aufgetreten. So unter anderem als "Goffredo" in Händels Rinaldo an der Bayerischen Staatsoper, als "Accomate" in Hasses Solimano an der Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin und in der Titelrolle von Alessandro Scarlattis Massimo Puppieno am Theatro Massimo in Palermo. Am Staatstheater Darmstadt war er als "Siebel" in Charles Gounods Faust und als "Don Liscione" in Domenico Scarlattis La Dirindina zu hören.

Crowe sang mit tragenden Partien bei den Händelfestspielen in Halle, Göttingen und Karlsruhe, am Nationaltheater Mannheim, am Theater Basel, beim Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, dem Mozart-Festival in Warschau, dem Early Music Festival of Connecticut, dem Festival die Due Mondi in Spoleto, den Musikfestspielen Potsdam Sanssouci, am Theater Basel, im Nehru House, New Delhi, Indien, u.v.m.

Als Konzert- und Oratoriensolist trat er in renommierten Konzertsälen und Festivals auf, darunter das Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Chopin Institute of Warsaw, die Dresdner Musikfestspiele, das Stockholm Early Music Festival, die Berliner Philharmonie und das Janacek Festival in Ostrava. 2014 sang er Mozart’s "Exultate Jubilate" mit der Bath Philharmonia in Bath Abbey.

Crowes erste CD-Veröffentlichungen, "Virtuoso Solo Motets of Giacomo Carissimi", die in der Zeitschrift Crescendo auf die Jahresbestenliste 2008 aufgenommen wurde, und "Songs to Mary" mit Marien-Motetten von Carissimi, Grandi und Monteverdi wurden in der Hänssler Edition veröffentlicht. 2017 erschein bei Toccata Classics seine dritte Aufnahme: "The Complete Amen, Alleluias of G. F. Handel, HWV 269-277" mit dem Ensemble Il Furioso. Weitere Opern- und Oratorien hat er mit Sony Classics, Koch International Classics, Oehms Classics, Heresy Records und dem ORF aufgenommen.

Seit Mai 2018 ist Dr. Crowe der künstlerischer Leiter des Festivals für Alte Musik Aalen (FAMA). Sein erstes Buch, eine Kritische Fassung mit Kommentar von etwa 30 Lieder und Arien aus der Frühromantik, verziert von dem letzten Opernkastrat Giambattista Velluti, erscheint in Kürze.
