Info zu Where are we now?

Critically acclaimed guitarist TOBIAS GRIM, based in Gothenburg, now has a genre-blending album that reflects a rich journey across cultures and continents. It weaves together compositions with influences from Sweden, Senegal, North America & Brazil. In a time of uncertainty, Tobias explores whether music can unite us—offering an expressive, hopeful reflection shaped by a profound love for sound & human connection. Now featuring musicians: Olli Rantala (Finland), Danilo, Armand van Wijck (Holland), Lamine Cissokho (Senegal) and Karolina Vucidolac.

It is best to clarify right away that the title track is not a jazz version of David Bowie’s Berlin-nostalgic "Where Are We Now?". Instead, it is an original composition by Tobias Grim—echoing his favorites John Scofield and Pat Metheny—set to a samba-infused rhythm. Armand Van Wijck’s harmonica adds extra color to the track, playing over Rubem Faria’s buoyant electric bass. This is one of five tracks (out of the album's nine) penned by Grim, two of which were co-written with others.

Gothenburg-based guitarist Tobias Grim began his musical journey in Linköping, where he was already eagerly playing the guitar at a tender age. Today, he is a highly acclaimed and tastefully skilled guitarist who spices his accessible yet impeccably performed jazz with generous doses of Brazilian music.

His 2014 debut album was titled *Brazil Lines*, and that green-and-yellow Brazilian flair is applied liberally to *Where Are We Now?* as well. Milton Nascimento’s classic "Milagres dos Peixes" is one of two tracks featuring the refreshing vocals of Karolina Vucidolac. Grim has also performed with the trio Moirango, a group dedicated to Brazilian musical styles.

At times, African influences can also be detected, such as in the traditional Senegalese piece "Kanakassi." Lamine Cissokho’s kora sounds beautiful; he also appears on the single "Gånglek från Älvdalen"—a traditional Swedish tune familiar to many through Jan Johansson’s classic album *Jazz på svenska*. Here, Grim’s electric guitar converses with Norwegian Terese Lien Evenstad’s violin, Olli Rantala’s double bass, and Johan Birgenius’s fluid drumming. Evenstad’s violin also appears on the next track, Grim’s own jazz excursion "A Search for Peace."

The album concludes with the same "Witchi Tai To" that Magnus Carlson & The Moon Ray Quintet breathed new life into last year on their album *Shadows*. The song by American jazz saxophonist Jim Pepper—rooted in a ceremonial peyote chant—becomes a cool, tranquil piece here. A varied album, evidently.
