The Consort Les Voix humaines presents works by the composer August Kühnel (1645-c.1700) who, despite his modest output, remains the most important master of the bass viol in his time in Germany. Dedicated to his employer, the Sonate ò Partite ad una ò due viole da gamba, con il basso continuo are the only ones Kühnel published.

The title of the collection, Sonatas or Partitas, is surprising in that it suggests that each composition can be called both. While requiring the instrument to excel in both melodic and harmonic playing, Kühnel's only collection beautifully combines Italian, French and German styles. He is by turns elegant, sensitive and virtuosic.
