Info zu Papa Haydn’s Ghost Stories
Maybe it was Joseph Haydn’s little fling with the widow Rebecca chroeter that inspired him to put music to Anne Hunter’s poetry about ghosts, mermaids and secret love? In 1794 he published a collection of songs where the melodies and ingenious accompaniments paints the pictures the texts hint at. Sometimes serene and beautiful, thunder and storms always wait under the surface of these songs, and is sometimes let loose in wild runs and strange chords. This music predict the gothic sensibility where dark medieval stories are shrouded in mysteries, much to the same effect as our times horror singing in Haydn’s time was closer to speech and theatre than our days’ operatic style, partly because a singer didn’t have to develop a technique that goes through an entire orchestra of steel strings. The technique was directed more towards flexibility, elegance, rapidity, and of course eloquence. The songs are scored for voice and fortepiano, but written with techniques that predate the lied genre and the fortepiano. The accompaniment consists partly of purely continuo techniques, partly of melodic elements.
