Info zu Tio Karlfeldt
Singer and composer Nina Åkerblom Nielsen will release her fifth album on October 23rd. In it, she interprets ten poems by Erik Axel Karlfeldt, set to her own music and featuring some of Sweden’s foremost musicians, such as "riksspelmannen" (master folk musician) Hans Kennemark and pianist Stefan Wingefors.
On October 1, 1918, the Karlfeldt family moved from Lidingö to the Södermalm district of Stockholm. The concluding lines about the capercaillie in the poem "October" serve to symbolize the nature-loving poet’s bittersweet longing to return to the house with its beautiful garden.
"But around that humble little patch of earth where children and birds once chirped, and songs found their words, my October-longing shall brood in the shadows—much like a capercaillie brooding in a saffron-hued birch."
Much like Karlfeldt, Nina draws inspiration from her proximity to nature in her creative work; she herself cannot imagine ever leaving her wonderful country home—the very place where this album was brought to life.
"Erik Axel Karlfeldt’s poetry is practically made to be set to music. 'Songs finding their words'—that is how he himself described his own creative process. There is an inherent melodic quality in many of his poems; the musical notes came to me in a completely natural, intuitive way."
In Karlfeldt’s poetry, nature is never merely a backdrop; it exists in tandem with humanity. His work reflects a deep love for the forest, the earth, the vegetation, the changing seasons, and his native region.
Karlfeldt’s nature is sensual and concrete, yet simultaneously rich in symbolism.
"Spring and autumn—as metaphors for life and death—are recurring themes throughout his poems. And surely, no other Swedish poet has captured romantic love quite like he has." Recently, interest in Karlfeldt’s work has seen a resurgence; following a Grammis nomination for "Dansband Album of the Year 2025," he is perhaps more relevant now than he has been for a very long time. More than a century after these words were written, we still face the same spring. The same autumn. We fall in love, experience loss, yearn, and begin anew.
