SPIRIT ist das Debütalbum des Brede Sørum Quartet, mit Sørum selbst als Frontmann. Das junge Quartett bietet akustische Musik, die vor purer Jugend blüht, aber mit einer Reife und musikalischen Exzesse, die selbst die erfahrensten Jazzhörer dazu bringen werden, ihre Ohren zu spitzen. Die geschriebene Musik basiert auf der Fähigkeit der Band, mit starker musikalischer Leidenschaft und einer energetischen Interaktion Energie zu erzeugen und über einen längeren Zeitraum aufrechtzuerhalten. Die Musik öffnet sich, und in guter Jazztradition ermöglicht dies den Musikern, die großen Formen frei zu entfalten und auszuschmücken. Dies ist Musik, die atmet und gleichzeitig brodelt, wobei immer ein zusätzlicher Gang verfügbar ist.

Sørum hat einige der aufregendsten jungen Musiker Norwegens im Bereich Jazz und Improvisationsmusik in sein Quartett eingeladen. Sie verarbeiten die Musik mit klaren Inspirationsquellen für die Innovationen der 60er Jahre im Free Jazz und Modal Jazz. Das Quartett möchte diese Tradition ehren und gleichzeitig bewusst auf das Kommende blicken.

Die Suite SPIRIT besteht aus vier Sätzen, die sich von Dunkelheit zu Licht, von Nebel zu Klarheit bewegen. Die Suite wurde in einem Take aufgenommen und zeugt von einem sehr reifen Quartett. Sie ist auch eine starke Dokumentation der Musiker hier und jetzt, des Quartetts selbst und seiner Erforschung von Kreativität und Ausdauer im Laufe der Zeit. Die Vision hinter der Suite ist, dass sie als Katalysator für einen meditativen Zustand in den Musikern wirken kann, um hoffentlich in den Kern ihrer Musikalität vorzudringen – was es ihnen ermöglicht, sich von Körper und Geist zu befreien und im Moment und in der Musik präsent zu sein.

Brede Sørum Quartet
is a new, exciting, and uncompromising band led by the up-and-coming Norwegian saxophonist Brede Sørum.

The young quartet offers acoustic music that bubbles with pure youthful energy, but with a maturity and musical surplus comparable to experienced titans. This is music that both breathes and explodes, always with an extra gear ready to kick in.

Sørum has invited some of Norway's most exciting young musicians in jazz and improvisational music to join his quartet. They craft their music with clear inspirations from the innovations of 1960s modal jazz and spiritual music. The quartet aims to honor this tradition while consciously looking forward and honing their unique sound.

The band recently released their first album, "SPIRIT," on Øra Fonogram. The album is a suite consisting of four movements, transitioning from darkness to light, from cloudiness to clarity. The suite was recorded in one take, showcasing a very mature quartet. It also stands as a strong documentation of the musicians here and now, the quartet itself, and their exploration of creativity and endurance over time. The vision behind the suite is for it to act as a catalyst for a meditative state in the musicians, to hopefully reach the core of their musicality - allowing them to free themselves from body and mind, and be present in the moment and the music.
