Info zu Heavy Kitten
Michael McGowan, a Värmland native originally from Alabama who goes by the name The Satchel Kid, has recently released his new album, “Heavy Kitten.” It’s an album filled with life-affirming indie-country that feels very genuine and authentic.
It was love that brought Michael McGowan to the forests of Värmland a few years ago. His wife, Sara, is also part of the band, where she plays drums, various percussion instruments, and provides some background vocals. Her stage name is “Cindy Palomino.” Other musicians in the band include “Alex Bravo”—whose real name is Alex Drufva—who plays various guitars, bass, and provides some vocals. “Chico” Andreas Sjögren plays atmospheric pedal steel, which really adds to the country feel. Christer Svensson plays harmonica on “Turn Around Sixten” and makes it sound as if it could be Mickey Raphael playing on a Willie Nelson song.
On “Sweet Rose-Marie,” you can hear influences from Johnny Cash, and “Alex Bravo” plays guitar with a lot of “twang” in the sound. I also hear influences from John Prine and Kinky Friedman, both of whom had a lot of underlying humor in their lyrics. The Satchel Kid does too. His singing voice and style remind me a bit of Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes).
The Satchel Kid’s earlier albums leaned more toward indie/Americana, but over time he’s shifted more toward country, though there are still tracks here that are a bit less country, such as the closing track “Famous Last Word.”
The Satchel Kid often says he’s no cowboy, yet he makes really great cowboy-country in songs like “Old Future” and “Turn Around Sixten.” Overall, it’s a very varied album with songs of consistently high quality in both lyrics and music. To me, The Satchel Kid’s music is life-affirming.
“Heavy Kitten” is an album I love to listen to over and over again, and it just gets better with every listen. Addictive music that makes you feel good is truly needed in today’s crazy world.
