The London-born pianist Myra Hess was one of the most beloved musical artists in the English-speaking world, especially in Britain where she established the famed National Gallery concerts which brought much comfort and hope to a war-ridden nation. Although renowned as a solo artist, she was a magnificent chamber musician, as revealed on this album of her performances in piano trios by Schubert and Brahms.

The Hungarian violinist Jelly d'Aranyi plays in both works and was a close friend of Hess. d'Aranyi was a student of Jeno Hubay and was the great-niece of the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim. Her spectacular violin playing resulted in numerous works written for her, including Bartok's two violin sonatas, Ravel's Tzigane and Vaughan Williams's Concerto Accademico. Hess and d'Aranyi were renowned as a violin-piano duo, and in 1928 the Telegraph's critic declared that there had been "no duo so fine since Ysaye and Busoni".

The Hess-d'Aranyi duo are joined in the wonderful Schubert B-flat Trio by the English cellist Felix Salmond who was the first soloist to perform Elgar's Cello Concerto. In the Brahms C-major Trio, the cello part is taken by the marvellous Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassado who was one of Pablo Casals's most renowned students. Also included on the album is Myra Hess's eloquent recording of the Schubert Piano Sonata in A, Op.120.

Myra Hess
wurde als jüngstes von vier Kindern in Hampstead bei London geboren. Mit zwölf Jahren gewann sie ein Stipendium der Royal Academy of Music in London, wo sie bis 1907 studierte.

Sie hatte als Siebzehnjährige ihr Debüt mit Beethovens G-Dur-Klavierkonzert unter Thomas Beecham und nahm sofort das Publikum mit ihrer überragenden Kunst ein. Dennoch war es für sie als junge Frau nicht einfach, sich ihren Lebensunterhalt unter all den „Klaviergrößen“ ihrer Zeit als Solistin zu verdienen, und so teilte sie viele Jahre ihres Lebens zwischen dem Konzertieren (häufig spielten sie und ihre Kusine Irene Scharrer an zwei Klavieren) und dem Unterrichten auf.

In den Niederlanden feierte sie ihre ersten triumphalen Erfolge; Deutschland und Frankreich folgten rasch, und von 1922 an bereiste sie die USA und Kanada. Sie setzte sich auch für zeitgenössische KomponistInnen ein; dennoch galt sie vor allem als hervorragende Interpretin Bachs, der Klassiker und Romantiker.

Myra Hess war lebhaft, humorvoll und gesellig. Sie interessierte sich sehr für Tennis (und bemerkte einmal, dass der pianistische Beruf etwa so wäre, wie wenn frau sich permanent auf dem Centre Court in Wimbledon befände), spielte Karten und Scrabble, löste selbst im Ausland täglich das notorisch schwierige Kreuzworträtsel der Times und ließ sich auf Partys gelegentlich dazu bewegen, Etüden auf den schwarzen Tasten mit einer Apfelsine in der Hand zu spielen.

Als der Krieg das Konzertleben in London lahmzulegen drohte, initiierte Myra Hess, inzwischen – als erste/r Instrumentalist/in – „Commander of the British Empire“ und bald darauf „Dame Myra Hess“, die von 1939 bis 1946 regelmäßig stattfindenden Mittagskonzerte in der National Gallery. Damit half sie jungen KünstlerInnen, den Kontakt zum Publikum zu halten und auszubauen. Insgesamt besuchten mehr als 800.000 Menschen diese Konzerte und fanden geistige und emotionale Erholung in einer Zeit, als die Welt drohte, in Flammen aufzugehen. Auf dem Plattenmarkt sind noch gelegentlich Aufnahmen mit Myra Hess erhältlich.
