Info zu The Vibe

A Diverse and Compelling Collection: With her debut album, The Vibe, Japanese-born, Michigan-based trombonist Nanami Haruta establishes herself as a remarkable new force in the jazz world. This exhilarating debut brings together Haruta’s stunning artistry with an all-star lineup of jazz heavyweights, including her mentor and producer, Michael Dease.

The album’s dynamic sound, inspired by the iconic Kai Winding and J.J. Johnson frontline, features a rhythm section of pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., providing a powerhouse foundation for Haruta’s creative voice. Dease, who switches to baritone sax on select tracks, praises Haruta’s artistry:

“Nanami’s ethereal deftness on trombone makes you forget how challenging it is to play. She has the fire of Detroit’s Curtis Fuller mingled with the charm of Japan’s Sapporo countryside. She’s poised to lead her generation on this instrument.”

Trombonist Nanami Haruta made the move from her native Sapporo to Tokyo as a teenager, and quickly established herself as a dynamic and inspired player. Master trombonist Michael Dease heard her at a festival when she was 17, and later convinced her to make another move, to pursue her degree with him and Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University. With professional affiliations now including Whitaker's Sextet and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.'s Big Band, The Vibe documents the respect she's garnered from her mentors and showcases her significant musical voice. With her quartet—including Whitaker, Owens, and Xavier Davis on piano—along with guest appearances by producer Dease and guitarist Chris Minami, Haruta unveils an assertive posture and a compelling, robust tone on this set of five originals, two pieces by co-producer/executive producer Gregg Hill, and four covers, including Curtis Fuller's "Algonquin."

"More than just the joy of discovering a new artist, the dazzling beauty of this album, its near-flawless execution, and its sheer artistic brilliance propel The Vibe into our collection of Indispensable Albums." (Thierry De Clemensat, PARIS-MOVE)

"Here's a debut album from a trombonist with a lot of warmth and promise. Nanami Haruta hits the ground running on this al bum with Michael Dease/tb-bars, Xavier Davis/p, Rodney Whitaker/b, Ulysses Owens Jr/dr and guest Chris Minami/g on a mix of originals and coves. Haruta shows off her glowing tone on a gloriously Spartan take of "Unchained Melody ..." (George W Harris, Jazz Weekly)
