Die Romantik hatte viele Gesichter. Mozarts Geist wirkte weiterhin im Musikleben nach, und Beethovens gewaltige Musik setzte den Maßstab für jeden romantischen Komponisten. Mozarts Erbe wurde von zwei großen Pianisten weitergeführt: Hummel, einem Schüler Mozarts, und Ries, einem Schüler Beethovens. Jeder von ihnen gab der Romantik eine andere Richtung. Zeitungen in ganz Europa schrieben über die „wilde Romantik“ des Bohemiens Ries, der heute als Vorläufer Schumanns gilt. Derweil verzauberte und verblüffte der Virtuose Hummel sein Publikum. Um 1815, zur Zeit des Wiener Kongresses, war er der berühmteste Pianist der Welt, und Liszt war von seiner Musik begeistert. Schubert hingegen war der Schöpfer und die Verkörperung des persönlichen Ausdrucks in der Romantik. Er trat nur in privatem Kreis auf und hatte kein Interesse an leerer Virtuosität, obwohl er ein hervorragender Pianist war, dessen Instrument, so sagten Zeitgenossen, unter seinen Händen zu singen schien.

Diese neue Aufnahme präsentiert das Klavierquartett in G-Dur von Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837), das Klavierquartett in f-Moll von Ferdinand Ries (1784–1838) und das Adagio & Rondo Concertante von Franz Schubert (1797–1828).

The Van Swieten Society is a collective of musicians with a passion for chamber music from the classical and early-romantic periods. The ensemble plays on period instruments and regularly invites guest musicians who are related to its playing style. This flexible approach guarantees an adventurous choice of repertoire with various line-ups. The Van Swieten Society specialises first and foremost in the great masters of the musically rich period from Bach to Schumann. In addition, intensive research in international libraries still yields new discoveries; high-quality works that have fallen into oblivion for all kinds of reasons and deserve to be heard again. All this leads to colourful programmes with strong themes.
