Info zu Cross St Demos
"Kitty’s voice and her simple yet glass-sharp production nearly made my jaw drop. With time to kill, I settled in the comfy armchair in the corner and pressed ‘play’ again.
The effortless and uncomplicated guitar intro to track #1 I Just I Just I Just Want Them To Know barely prepared me for the damaged beauty of the lyrics and story in Kitty’s heartbreaking break-up tale. I’m not technical in the slightest; but there really is something special in the production here, as there seems to be space for every word, note and breath … while also sounding strained and claustrophobic, which is how a break up feels.
This is followed by 2.45 (I Think About This All The Time) another atmospheric tale full of intricate musicality, which sounds like it has the most maudlin steel guitar in the background I’ve ever heard, shrouding her pearlescent voice which errs on the side of lo-fi.
Obviously I’m late to the party here, but in my defence Kitty/march seems not to have strayed further North than London since she released her debut album All Of The Above, in 2021, and I don’t listen to the hip radio shows that have played her songs.
When I first listen to an album I write notes which I later refer to; which is where the ‘break up’ imagery comes from; but the more I’ve listened … it’s actually kind of the opposite as if you listen carefully Kitty is actually telling us about the between bit of ending one relationship and beginning another – think of them more as ‘tentative love songs’?
There is certainly a Lo-Fi sensibility to the way march has created A Dangerous Place and the eloquent storytelling of the brooding Intertwine, as they conjure up memories of first hearing Nick Drake and Elliot Smith many moons ago, and her voice could easily be described as being an English Dolores O’Riordan too.
While it was Track #1 I Just Want Them To Know that first caught my attention, but the fifth and final song the desperately emotional and haunting So No More Digging Up Bones is something of a song that any songwriter would be proud of … and the silky and fog light production too.
I know better than most how many singer-songwriters there are out there these days, covering every musical base known to man; some are very good too … but sometimes a beautiful and colourful poppy pokes it head above the rest of the golden cornfield … and that’s what march aka Kitty O’Neal sounds like to me."
