Info zu Why Are You OK

„Why Are You OK“ ist das mittlerweile fünfte Studiowerk von Band of Horses. Darauf gibt es insgesamt zwölf neue Songs der Band aus Seattle. Wie schon bei den Vorgängern zeichnete auch beim neuen Album Frontmann Ben Bridwell für das Songwriting verantwortlich.

Statt dafür aber wie sonst die Abgeschiedenheit zu suchen und sich z. B. in ein Strandhaus zurückzuziehen, schrieb er den Großteil der Lieder im Kreise seiner Familie. Das spiegelt sich auch in den Texten auf „Why Are You OK“ wider, die zunehmend alltägliche Themen behandeln.

Unterstützung beim Schaffensprozess hat er für das fünfte Studioalbum nicht nur von seinen Bandmitgliedern erhalten, sondern – nach vorangegangener Zusammenarbeit mit Phil Ek oder dem legendären Glyn Johns - auch von einem neuen Produzenten, der sich seine Sporen bislang selbst als Musiker verdient hatte.

Nachdem die Songs geschrieben waren, mietete sich Ben mit seiner Band ein altes Haus in North Carolina in einem kleinen Städtchen namens Bat Cave (.) und spielte ohne Deadlines und sonstige äußere Zwänge einfach drauf los, alte wie neue Stücke. Auf dem Höhepunkt dieser entspannten Tage, war der Band klar, dass es an der Zeit ist, das neue Album aufzunehmen. Bei der Suche nach einem neuen Produzenten, der den Sinn für gute Vibes, Humor und Freude mit der Band teilen würde, setzte sich Ben Bridwell mit Indie-Ikone und Grandaddy-Frontmann Jason Lytle in Verbidnung.

Obwohl Lytle außerhalb des eigenen Band-Kosmos bislang kaum Produzenten-Erfahrung hatte, war Bridwell klar, dass die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm genau das Richtige war. Als Fan der Band und jemand, der die persönliche Nähe zum Produzenten für eine fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit unbedingt braucht, erinnert er sich: “We were taking a risk on indie rock in a way, and just having fun, making songs the way I make them—which is amateurism at its worst, but fun as fuck… We didn’t have anybody bearing down on us like an established taskmaster might. We really got to go slow and get deliberate and take it back to something more ‘us.’”

Ob Humor, Musikgeschmack oder Arbeitsweise - die Chemie zwischen Bridwell und Lytle stimmte sofort, als die beiden 2014 erstmals zusammen unterwegs waren, um sich Studios anzuschauen. Im darauffolgenden Austausch übers Internet lief die Zusammenarbeit bereits an, als Bridwell erste Demos schickte und Lytle Ideen für zusätzliche Instrumente und Vocal-Spuren entwickelte. “We can smell our own for sure: we’re both a bit grumpy, enjoy a cold beer or twelve, and like to laugh at funny shit. There’s a brotherly connection. We share the same ears.” so Bridwell.

Lylte ergänzt: “It was fascinating to be put into this position. As any music fan can attest, it was like that feeling when you see one of your favorite bands and you kind of see the path that they’re on and you can almost think, ‘God, this is the record I want them to make.’ I got to have some sort of hand in helping direct the direction the record is gonna go.”

Der Großteil des Albums entstand schließlich in familiärer Atmosphäre im Städtchen Stinson zwischen Surf-Sessions und lockeren, gemeinsamem Stunden unter der kalifornischen Sonne. Fertiggestellt wurde das Album dann im Februar 2015 in den Appleahead Studios im winterlichen Woodstock. “We were nearing the end, and we’d been in Stinson, this amazing church of weather and stars and peace and quiet, and it was like we needed another side of the coin,” so Bridwell. “We thought, ‘Let’s go to Upstate New York, another residential studio, and maybe we’ll get some snow and a shut-in vibe, more of a hunker-down thing.’ The beauty of it was inspiring as hell, especially when you’re from the South; snow is magical.”

Ein weiterer Mentor, der Bridwell während der Entstehung von „Why Are You OK“ begleitete war Rick Rubin, der schon 2010 maßgeblichen Anteil daran hatte, dass Band Of Horses ihr Album Infinite Arms bei Columbia Records veröffentlichten. “Rick came along at the perfect time” erzählt Bridwell. “We’d amassed a group of songs but were still a bit listless, swinging all over the damn place. Rick took a liking to it, and really helped steer a lot of tepid, mixed emotions on a lot of things. That really reined it in for me, even a couple of songs I wasn’t sure about; he’d say, ‘That’s good, keep going that way’—that helped a lot. It was nice to have somebody pat you on the back and tell you you’re on the right track. He’s saved us twice now.”

Im Ergebnis steht mit „Why Are You OK“ ein Album, das vielleicht auch eine Lektion ist. Eine Lektion in Vertrauen und Sich-Leiten-Lassen. Wenn es uns etwas zeigen kann, dann dies: Umgibst du dich mit den Leuten, die dir am meisten bedeuten, dann wirst du am Ende wissen, dass alles gut - alles OK – ist, so wie es ist.

Band of Horses
This South Carolina-based indie-rock band’s swirling, dreampop-like musical backing, ragged Neil Young influences and tenor vocals initially drew comparisons to fellow Southern-based indie rockers My Morning Jacket. Multi-instrumentalists Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke formed the group in Seattle in 2004 after their slow-core band Carissa’s Wierd broke up due to mounting financial problems. After releasing the Tour EP to glowing reviews, Band of Horses signed with indie label Sub Pop and recorded Everything All the Time, which gained surprising mainstream attention when its song “The Funeral” appeared in television shows, commercials and video games. Brooke left the band shortly after the album’s release to form the band Grand Archives. Bridwell with the lineup of Rob Hampton on bass and Creighton Barrett on drums moved Band of Horses to his native South Carolina. They recorded the fuller-sounding Cease to Begin at a studio in nearby Asheville, North Carolina. The disc topped Billboard’s independent album chart and reached Number 35 on the Billboard 200, spawning the Modern Rock hit “Is There a Ghost” (Number 34).
