Info zu Eat Your Greens (Deluxe Edition)
A jazz musician and composer has released a studio album inspired by deep spiritual philosophy and the living legacy of jazz legends. The decision to move to New York and pursue a professional career was guided by the personal mentorship and philosophy of legendary pianist Mulgrew Miller (Mulgrew Miller), who emphasized deep listening and authentic emotional commitment to every note. The artist's creative ethos was further shaped by pianist Harold Mabern (Harold Mabern), whose lessons in humility and maintaining a "beginner's mind" formed the foundational principle of this recording.
Conceptually, the album bridges traditional Afro-American improvisation with Eastern spiritual practices and philosophy, drawing on the teachings of Indian yogi Lahiri Mahasaya and saxophonist Wayne Shorter (Wayne Shorter). The record frames music-making as a continuous meditative practice fostering physical, mental, and spiritual harmony. Recorded alongside a close circle of collaborators, including bassist and co-producer Luca (Luca), the album's sonic layout spans contemporary jazz, acoustic jazz, and spiritual jazz.
“If you want to play this music, you got to love it. You have to sleep it, eat it, drink it, and most of all you have to play and put your life story, all your feelings in every note, every note…and realize too that the best thing a musician can learn is to learn how to listen.” (Mulgrew Miller)
I owe a great deal to Mulgrew Miller. He is directly responsible for inspiring me to move to New York and follow this path in music and Self Realization. This path has led me to discover the rituals that help to maintain threefold health; physical, mental & spiritual.
Another master and ancestor to whom I owe a great deal is Harold Mabern. In our first lesson, to put me at ease, he told me something I have never forgotten.
“Don’t be nervous, I’m just an old student.”
The generosity and humility displayed in that first moment is one of the biggest lessons I could have hoped for. Choosing to live a life in this music means to commit to a life long process, a process which compels us to be patient, maintain a beginner’s mind, and eat our greens.
To me, the musicians on this album exemplify these ideals and I am extremely grateful to have them as close collaborators, mentors, and friends.

Kelly Green
is a pianist, vocalist, composer, bandleader of rare elegance. She is known for accompanying herself through a widely diverse repertoire, showcasing emotionally potent, genre-defying original music seamlessly woven with reimagined works by Duke Ellington, Mulgrew Miller, Blossom Dearie, and others. Green and her band effortlessly blend modern innovation with the depth of jazz tradition, bringing audiences something as complex as it is accessible.
Critics have called her “one of the most gifted vocalists working today” (Paris-Move) and “one of the most quietly revolutionary vocalists of her generation” (Thierry De Clemensat). Jazz legend Christian McBride describes her as “one of the most talented and spirited people I know.”
Green’s fifth release as a leader, Corner of My Dreams (August 2025) is an album of all original music arranged for string quartet, four-part background vocals, her lead voice and rhythm section. It has received two Global Music Awards for Best Jazz Album and Emerging Artist. Green is set to release her most recent album, Eat Your Greens on August 28th of this year featuring the great Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Robinson, Steve Wilson and Wallace Roney Jr. alongside her working quartet.
Kelly was born and raised in Orlando, Florida by her mother, a ceramicist, and her father, a professional bassist and audio engineer. She discovered jazz by way of Thelonius Monk’s Brilliant Corners at age eleven and began attending the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshop each summer alongside her father. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida, studying under Bunky Green and Lynne Arriale before completing her master’s degree at William Paterson University, where she found mentors in the great Harold Mabern and Mulgrew Miller.
Since arriving in New York in 2015 she has performed and recorded with luminaries including Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Rich Perry, Steve Wilson, Scott Robinson, George Coleman, and Billy Hart.
Green has toured with her band (drummer Evan Hyde, bassist Luca Soul Rosenfeld, and flautist Elijah J. Thomas) extensively in the US, Europe, and South America, selling out lauded venues including Birdland, Dizzy’s Club (Jazz at Lincoln Center), Ronnie Scott’s, Duc De Lombards and appeared on stages including The Kennedy Center, Blue Note, the DC Jazz Festival, EFG London Jazz Festival, Long Island Jazz Festival, Figures Jazz Festival, and the Bahrain International Jazz Festival. In 2025, Green and her band were awarded the South Arts/Jazz Roads Touring Grant funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
In addition to her performance career, Green is a respected educator, having served as a teaching artist for Jazz House Kids for over a decade. She has led masterclasses at York College, Jacksonville University, William Paterson University, and Western Michigan University.
“Kelly Green is a triple threat as pianist, vocalist and composer” - Jazz Weekly, George Harris
“Her piano playing is sophisticated and modern while also being connected to the tradition. Her vocals are subtle, quietly expressive and full of insight.” - Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene
“Her love of music-making and of her audience is as warmly undeniable as it is rare in this hypercompetitive digital age.” - San Francisco Classical Voice, Jeff Kaliss
“Vocally, Sarah Vaughan seems to be an obvious influence; on the keys, Green plays with a strong sense for space and a flair for the unexpected…What’s most auspicious is her own compositions, and the outside-the-box sensibility that pervades them.” - New York Music Daily
