Seit die Argentinierin Camila Nebbia vor fünf Jahren ihre Heimat in Richtung Europa verlassen hat, hat sie sich zu einer der produktivsten, mutigsten und neugierigsten jungen Improvisationsmusikerinnen des Kontinents entwickelt. 2023 war die Saxofonistin im Rahmen von „Melting Pot“ zum ersten Mal beim Jazzfest Berlin zu Gast – nur ein Jahr später ist sie als Headlinerin mit ihrem eigenen Trio zurück. Sie teilt die Bühne mit zwei Engländern: dem Londoner und Kodian-Trio-Schlagzeuger Andrew Lisle und Kit Downes, der nicht nur Keyboarder von Enemy, Duopartner der Cellistin Lucy Railton und Wahlberliner, sondern auch unermüdlicher Kollaborateur ist. Trotz ihrer Arbeit in vielen verschiedenen Kontexten haben die drei Musiker*innen in diesem neuen Trio unverkennbar eine gemeinsame Sprache gefunden.

Wie auch ihr Debütalbum „Exhaust“ bezeugt, steckt in den vollständig improvisierten Konzerten von „Exhaust“ eine unbändige Energie. Nebbia ist hinlänglich für ihr wildes Spiel bekannt. Doch von Downes könnten einige Hörer*innen überrascht sein, wenn sie seine kontemplative, groovige Seite aus anderen Ensembles kennen: als Teil von „Exhaust“ strotzt sein Spiel nur so vor Energie und Spontaneität. Schlagzeuger Andrew Lisle hält alles souverän zusammen, indem er mit seinem rhythmischen Gerüst das wilde Zusammenspiel bündelt.

Camila Nebbia
from Buenos Aires, based in Berlin, is a saxophone player, composer, improviser, visual artist and curator. Described by Jazz PT magazine as “an essential saxophonist of our time”. The multidisciplinary artist layers her practice through the creation and destruction of archival memory, exploring the concepts of identity, migration, and memory. Her work includes improvised and composed music, film creation, and audiovisual performances, forming a constellation of interconnected practices.

Her most recent solo album –'una ofrenda a la ausencia' (an offering to absence) with Relative Pitch Records– was described by the NYC Jazz Record as an 'innately human and personal album, surprising listeners with a passionate approach to jazz'. ​

Played and recorded with many artists of the international scene such as Marilyn Crispell, Michael Formanek, Angelica Sanchez, Randy Peterson, Tom Rainey, Patrick Shiroishi, Vinnie Sperrazza, Katt Hernandez, Kenneth Jimenez, Lesley Mok, Susana Santos Silva, Elsa Bergman, l’ Arfi collective of Lyon, Joanna Mattrey, Vincent Dromowski’s Flow regulator, Kit Downes, Andrew Lisle, John Hughes, among others.

Co-funder together with Maria Grand and Marta Sanchez of the independent record label Lilaila. Co-curator of the interdisciplinary festival “Guillotina'' in Buenos Aires, and curator of the streaming concert series called “A door in the mountain”. Curates the series “Disfigured Rivers” based in Berlin and its part of the curatorial team of the experimental music series Future Bash Reloaded. ​

Participated of many festivals around the world such Ultima Oslo (NO), Jazz Fest Berlin (DE), Saalfelden Jazz Festival (AT), Vision Outdoor Festival (DE) Serralves Jazz no Parque (PT), Winter Jazz Festival (US), Buenos Aires Jazz Festival (ARG), Lima Jazz Festival (PE), Diskurs Festival (DE), among others, and has assisted to several residencies such as, ART OMI (NYC), SIM (NYC) Jazz & Creative Music directed by Tyshawn Sorey and Vijay Iyer (CA), Konvent Zero (ES) UNCOOL (CH), Ensemble Evolution (US), Looking Glass Arts (US), CirkusVranen (SE), CCK with Tim Berne, Marilyn Crispell & Ben Goldberg (AR), among others. ​

Part of her projects are: Nebbia/Downes/Lisle "Exhaust" with Kit Downes & Andrew Lisle, Camila Nebbia & Angelica Sanchez Duo, Camila Nebbia solo, Nebbia Formaneck Sperrazza trio with Vinnie Sperrazza & Michael Formanek, Camila Nebbia's The Hanged One sextet, among others.
