Geräumig, entspannt, konzentriert, intim und gesprächig: So hörte sich schon sein Trio mit Doug Weiss und Al Foster an. Nun hat Jorge Rossy im Jazzcampus sein erstes Album für ECM aufgenommen - mit Robert Landfermann am Bass und Jeff Ballard an den Drums. Und die Musik, ausser einem Stück von Chris Cheek alles Eigenkompositionen des Leaders, hört sich nicht minder entspannt und doch voller Tiefe an und überzeugt durch ihre aussergewöhnliche Lyrik. Das Album wird seinem Titel vollauf gerecht, Puerta heisst Tür - und diese steht den drei Musikern mit jedem Stück ziemlich weit offen. Jorge Rossy lässt sowohl in seinen Kompositionen als auch in seinem Spiel auf dem Vibraphon - und vermehrt auf dem Marimba - bewusst viel Freiheit und einen Raum, den Robert Landfermann und Jeff Ballard mit der ihnen eigenen Kreativität so zu nutzen wissen, dass auch weniger swingende Stücke eine ganz gehörige Spannung entwickeln. Anderseits bleibt die Musik auch im Groove in jedem Augenblick transparent und schlüssig, zuweilen entwickeln sich im Trio herrliche Zwiegespräche - ein Vergnügen.

Jorge Rossy war in den ersten zehn Jahren Schlagzeuger in Brad Mehldaus Trio, Jeff Ballard ist es seit 2005, und beide sind auch als Dozenten im Jazzcampus wohlbekannt. Mit Robert Landfermann haben sie einen herausragenden Bassisten dabei, den man etwa vom Pablo Held Trio kennt und der sowohl mit der europäischen Crème (u.a. Joachim Kühn, Tomas Stanko, Django Bates, Manfred Schoof) als auch mit US-Grössen wie Chris Potter, John Hollenbeck, Lee Konitz, John Scoefield, Simon Nabatov oder Mark Turner spielte.

Jorge Rossy
is internationally recognised as one of the most influential drummers of his generation. His sideman work includes over 180 recordings with renowned jazz musicians such as Brad Mehldau, Ethan Iverson, Kevin Hays, Albert Sanz, Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jakob Bro, Enrico Pieranunzi and Steve Swallow, among many others. Jorge has also toured with some jazz greats including Charlie Haden, Wayne Shorter, Lee Konitz, Carla Bley, and Joe Lovano.

Besides his work as a drummer, Jorge has a distinctive voice on the vibes, marimba and piano, and a unique sound as a composer and band leader. Since his first CD under his own name, Jorge Rossy Trio Wicca (Fresh Sound), recorded in 2006, Jorge has recorded over 30 albums as a band leader or co-leader, to critical acclaim from publications such as Jazz Times, Downbeat, Jazz Around, and All About Jazz.

In 2015, Jorge recorded Stay There (Pirouet), his debut recording as a vibes and marimba player, leading a truly stellar band. Since then, Jorge has toured and recorded with different configurations of his band the Jordi Rossy Vibes Quintet and several co-led projects, including Passport Quartet, Rossy & Kanan Quartet, Beck/Landolf/Rossy, Fox + Chris Cheek and Rossy & Vercher Quintet «Filantropía», among others. His second vibes quintet album Beyond Sunday (Jazz&People) came out in 2018 and his first vibes trio album, Puerta, will be released on ECM in November 2021.

All the bands that Jorge has led or co-led since 2015 are made up of outstanding musicians, collaborating to create a distinctive sound and an aesthetic full of intimate complicity. The long list of his bandmates includes Jeff Ballard, Robert Landfermann, Joe Chambers, Al Foster, Jimmy Wormworth, Joey Baron, Adam Cruz, Billy Hart, Mark Turner, Joshua Redman, Domenic Landolf, Pietro Tonolo, Javier Vercher, Chris Cheek, Mike Kanan, Kevin Hays, Michael Beck, Doug Weiss, Putter Smith, Nico Moreaux, Masa Kamaguchi, Marc Abrams, Pete Bernstein, Jaume Llombart, Pierre Perchaud and Vincent Peirani.

Jeff Ballard
Born on September 17, 1963, in Santa Cruz, CA, USA, Ballard’s past and present recording sessions and touring associates read like a who’s who of jazz. To name a select few: Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Brad Mehldau. His present work continues with the Brad Mehldau Trio, as co-leader of collective group FLY (featuring Mark Turner, Ballard, and Larry Grenadier) and with his own groups The Jeff Ballard Trio and Jeff Ballard Fairgrounds.

Robert Landfermann
was born in Oberwinter, Germany, on May 28, 1982. He has played and/or recorded with musicians such as John Scofield, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Barre Philipps, Yo-yo Ma, John Taylor, John Hollenbeck, Joachim Kühn, Chris Potter, Tomasz Stanko, Django Bates and Dave Liebman. In 2006 he founded his first band as a leader: the trio Die Freundliche Übernahme and since 2006 he has formed part of the Pablo Held Trio.
