Lyle Workman
Film composer, guitarist, artist, songwriter, producer, and arranger LYLE WORKMAN has built a remarkably diverse career, balancing feature film and television composition, studio work for major recording artists, and performances on stages around the world.

His film composition credits include Superbad, the 40-Year-Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Yes Man, Win Win, American Reunion, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and Bad Santa 2. He also contributed additional music to Knocked Up, Chef, and Seth Rogen’s The Interview.

Films featuring Workman’s music have grossed over one billion dollars worldwide, with four reaching the number one spot at the U.S. box office.

As a session guitarist, Workman has recorded with artists including Sting, Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Bryan Adams, Shakira, Sara Bareilles, Ziggy Marley, Jellyfish, and many others.

As a solo artist, Lyle has released 34 albums and EPs. His 2021 release on Blue Canoe Records, Uncommon Measures, featuring a 63-piece orchestra recorded at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios, received international acclaim and has been described by Workman as his magnum opus.

Recorded live in November 2025 at the intimate, artist-driven Alvas Showroom, Lyle’s latest release, Live at Alvas, arrives June 12, 2026. The album captures Workman in his most natural musical setting, leading his five-piece ensemble through an evening of adventurous, emotionally resonant performances that highlight both his versatility as a composer and his distinctive voice as a guitarist.

A Northern California native, Workman was recruited to join Todd Rundgren’s band, recording and touring extensively throughout the United States and Japan. From 1994 to 1998, he also recorded and toured with Pixies founder Frank Black.

From 1999 to 2001, Workman toured internationally with Beck, performing at major festivals and venues across North America and Europe, as well as appearing on television programs including Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and The American Music Awards.

In 2004, Workman joined Sting’s band, making his debut performance at the historic Live 8 benefit concert in London. Extensive touring throughout Europe and South America followed, ultimately leading to a songwriting collaboration on Sting’s 2016 album 57th & 9th.

Workman’s years as a sideman helped shape his instinct for supporting and elevating an artist’s creative vision — a skill set that translated naturally into composing for film and television. Beginning with commercial work, he eventually moved into feature films, first composing for Made, written and directed by Jon Favreau. After contributing additional music to Kicking & Screaming, Workman began a long-running collaboration with producer and director Judd Apatow, who selected him to compose the score for the 40-Year-Old Virgin. That partnership led to numerous additional Apatow productions, including the Netflix series LOVE and HBO’s Crashing.

As a producer, Workman collaborated with Dutch superstar Ilse DeLange on multiple platinum-selling, number-one albums in the Netherlands. His versatility as a guitarist has also led to performances alongside artists such as Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Herb Alpert, Steve Vai, and many others.

Born and raised in San Jose, California, Workman fell in love with The Beatles at an early age and taught himself guitar by listening to their records. While his musical interests eventually expanded from progressive rock to jazz, even leading to a featured appearance on jazz legend Tony Williams’ album Wilderness — he has always maintained a deep appreciation for the craft of the perfectly written pop song.

After studying music in college, Workman joined the Sacramento-based band Bourgeois Tagg, which signed with Island Records. He co-wrote the hit single “I Don’t Mind at All,” which charted internationally and helped earn the band appearances on The Tonight Show, Top of the Pops, American Bandstand, and other major television programs. Following two albums with Bourgeois Tagg, Workman quickly became an in-demand studio and touring musician for a wide range of internationally recognized artists.

In May 2024, Workman returned to the road as a member of Sarah McLachlan’s touring band for the 30th- anniversary celebration of her acclaimed album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, performed in its entirety across the United States. In 2025, he once again marked a milestone anniversary by touring in support of Frank Black’s Teenager of the Year, the landmark 1994 album on which he originally performed.
