Info zu Let Me See Your Heart (feat. Alex Acuna & Jon Cowherd)

Andy James
After many years as an internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer, based in Madrid and traveling the globe with some of the genre’s most acclaimed musicians and performers, Andy James made an artful transition into jazz, emerging as a soulful vocalist, songwriter and interpreter whose music continually finds new ways to bring her many influences together.

Her latest release, Happy People, Volume Two: Get Ready, continues the adventurous flamenco-jazz fusion of its predecessor while expanding further into Latin jazz, reflecting an artist whose creative journey has become increasingly eclectic without ever losing sight of the rhythmic foundation that shaped her. Created with her husband and creative partner Piero Pata and pianist, arranger and co-producer Jon Cowherd, the album once again places Andy at the center of an extraordinary ensemble while pairing joyful, rhythmically vibrant music with lyrics that embrace the more complicated realities of love and life.

That adventurous spirit began in Melbourne, Australia, where Andy grew up surrounded by two very different but ultimately complementary influences. Her father was a devoted flamenco enthusiast, while her mother, jazz singer Lois Lorraine Lang, filled the family home with the music of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. Andy has long said that “Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald were in my soul at birth,” and she remembers singing with her mother from the age of three. At nine, she began studying flamenco dance, eventually following that passion to Madrid, where she spent two decades establishing herself as an internationally respected performer.

Working with such flamenco luminaries as Antonio Canales, Rafael Amargo, Ramon Jimenez and Paco de Lucia, Andy developed an extraordinary physical understanding of rhythm, movement and musical phrasing. Performing at major theatres in Spain and throughout Europe and Japan, she absorbed the intricate rhythmic language that would later become an essential part of her identity as a vocalist. Yet jazz had never disappeared from her musical consciousness. After moving to the United States, she began recording favorite jazz standards and performing in clubs in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, gradually transforming herself from dancer into an artist whose voice could carry the emotional and rhythmic knowledge of both worlds.

That synthesis reached a defining point with Happy People, also created in collaboration with Pata and Cowherd. Conceived during the difficult emotional landscape of the pandemic, the project deliberately paired uplifting music with lyrics that acknowledged heartbreak, uncertainty, longing and the complications of human relationships. Rather than pretending that life is always joyful, Andy and Piero discovered that melancholy words could become even more powerful when surrounded by rhythms that made people want to move, smile and hope.
