Info zu Blue Mountain

Rooted in the great American tradition of cowboy songs. Bob Weir’s first solo album in over 10 years, Blue Mountain is now available. Rooted in the great American tradition of cowboy songs, Blue Mountain features 12 original recordings created with Josh Kaufman, Josh Ritter, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner and Scott Devendorf.

Before he co-founded the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir spent a summer working and living on a ranch in Wyoming, sparking a lifelong fascination with the stories and songs of the American West. Blue Mountain, Weir's first solo album in more than 10 years, brings his musical journey full circle.

Working with producer Josh Kaufman, acclaimed songwriter Josh Ritter, guitarists Aaron and Bryce Dessner and bassist Scott Devendorf, Blue Mountain is a moody, highly textured modern interpretation of Weir's unforgettable experience.

"The Grateful Dead guitarist's first solo album in a decade is a set of 'cowboy songs' crafted with singer-songwriter Josh Ritter and indie-folk heavies like the National's Bryce and Aaron Dessner. Weir, who delivered most of the Dead's country covers, sings about 'plain-spun and rough' lives, 'cutpurse' evenings and unhappy trails, while a nimbus of electric guitars surrounds his acoustic bunkhouse strumming. The highlight is his self-penned and unaccompanied 'Ki-Yi Bossie,' in which 'a 12-step meeting under harsh fluorescent light' occasions a wry round of soul-searching, no wide-open spaces required." (Rolling Stone, September 2016)

"Bob Weir never stopped making music but he did back away from his solo career after Heaven Help the Fool, a misbegotten 1978 effort that found the Grateful Dead guitarist attempting to dabble in the sun-splashed surfaces of SoCal soft rock. After that, he retreated to the boogying Bobby & the Midnites, a side project that was abandoned after the Dead scored a hit in 1987 with In the Dark, then after the death of Jerry Garcia, he wandered through several jam bands, settling on RatDog as a vehicle for whatever songs he had. All of this is to say that when 2016's Blue Mountain is called Weir's best album since his 1972 debut Ace -- and it is, without question -- there simply isn't much competition. That said, Blue Mountain does display a level of conscious craft that is rare not only among Weir albums but also the Dead. Credit producer Josh Kaufman -- an associate of the National, who released a weighty Dead tribute called Day of the Dead earlier in 2016 -- and singer/songwriter Josh Ritter, who both worked with Weir to create a lovely, meditative salute to the "cowboy songs" dear to the guitarist's heart. Usually, Bobby's cowboy songs in a Dead set provided a bit of levity but Blue Mountain floats wistfully, sometimes seeming sweet, sometimes seeming sad, but always offering some rustic comfort. It helps that Kaufman dodges the austerity of Rick Rubin's stark recordings for Johnny Cash, nor does he indulge in the murk of Daniel Lanois' collaborations with Bob Dylan: instead, he finds a balance between simple and spacy, a blend that suits Weir well. Against this backdrop -- sometimes consisting of no more than acoustic guitar, sometimes a warm wash of guitar -- Weir sounds weathered and warm, reflective but not mired in nostalgia, not even when he's reviving trail songs or playing with American myths. In that sense, Blue Mountain is very much an extension of his work with the Grateful Dead, particularly Workingman's Dead and American Beauty: he's tapping into legends, then spinning them for the present day." Recorded Spring and Fall 2015 in Woodstock, New York, and San Rafael, California Produced by Josh Kaufman, Bob Weir

Bob Weir
For the first time in ten years, Bob Weir will release a new solo record, 'Blue Mountain,' on September 30 -- marking his debut project since signing with Columbia/Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. The release is his first album of entirely original material in thirty years and will be available on CD, 2LP vinyl, and digital. Producer Josh Kaufman partnered with Weir on the album, which features songwriting collaboration with Josh Ritter and performances from guitarists Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner and bassist Scott Devendorf.

Drawing on his earlier experiences working on a ranch in Wyoming as a teenager, Weir joined with Ritter, the Dessners, Devendorf and Kaufman to celebrate those times with twelve new songs.

Adam Block, President of Legacy Recordings notes, "We're so pleased to welcome Bob Weir to the Columbia/Legacy family and absolutely thrilled to partner with him to share these stories and this beautiful record with the world."

The album was recorded at a variety of locations on both coasts, including studios in Woodstock, NY and San Rafael, CA over the spring and fall of 2015. A host of fellow musicians appear alongside Weir on 'Blue Mountain' including Ray Rizzo (drums, harmonium, harmonica, backup vocals), Joe Russo (drums), Jon Shaw (upright bass, piano), Rob Burger (keyboard, accordion, tuned percussion), Sam Cohen (electric guitar and pedal steel), Nate Martinez (guitars, harmonium, backup vocals), Jay Lane (drums, vocals), Robin Sylvester (upright bass, vocals, hammond organ) and Steve Kimock (Lapsteel). Providing backup vocals are The Bandana Splits, comprised of Annie Nero, Lauren Balthrop and Dawn Landes. Kaufman produced the record with engineering by Dan Goodwin.

Weir is one of the founding members of the legendary Grateful Dead, which received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The band also appeared on Forbes' list of top-grossing entertainers and in the early '90s were the highest-grossing concert attraction in the U.S. Since establishing the band in 1965, Weir has become one of rock's finest and most distinctive rhythm guitarists. Earlier this year he received the inaugural Les Paul Spirit Award. Weir has also performed with many other acts including The Other Ones, Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, Ratdog and Furthur, co-led by former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. His first solo album, 'Ace,' was released in 1972. Most recently, Weir has been performing with Dead & Company, which features Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann along with Grammy-winnerJohn Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.

2014 saw the release of "The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir," created by Netflix which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Additionally, an Amazon film series based on Steve Parish's 2003 book, "Home Before Midnight: My Life on the Road with the Grateful Dead," is currently in development with Weir serving as an executive producer.
