All the world’s a stage in Nicole Atkins’ Drama— her seventh studio offering and first in five years. Produced by Pat Sansone (Wilco) in Nashville and written by Nicole, the retro rock chanteuse faces herself in the mirror with bold and intimate tracks exploring dreams, love, pain, and more. Arriving on the legendary Sun Records, Drama sonically spans 60s jangle pop to delightful 90s grooves for an out-of-time instant classic feel on tracks like “When The Night Falls,” “Trippin’ On Teardrops,” “Singing In the Mirror,” and “Cue To Symphony,” which features Chris Isaak.

“I got together with my old friend Emery Dobyns to write a song together,” said Nicole Atkins. “We had these chords, and the feeling from the music reminded me of something I would’ve written for my first album, Neptune City, and I thought about where I was back then. The toxic love affair. And tying it into who and where I am now, and being able to write a song about terrible love from a place of power. Some would call it growth. I’m just still in love with the ‘sound’ of heartache. It gets me like no other.”

Largely recorded live over four productive days in her current home base of Nashville, TN, with GRAMMY® Award-nominated musician/producer Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense, Robyn Hitchcock), Drama sees Atkins exploring the isolation, separation, and loneliness of a long-distance marriage through her signature fusion of musical genres and intimate lyrical songcraft. The album came together at the behest of her close friend and touring partner Chris Isaak, who signed her to Sun Records as part of his strategic alliance with the historic label as both artist and curator of new projects with his new imprint, Wicked Game Records. Drama spans style and era with smart design and an irrepressible buoyancy, from the girl group rush of “Trippin’ On Teardrops” and Memphis soul-styled “For No One” to the James Bond-meets-Stevie Nicks noir of “Danny” and the wonderfully moody duet with Isaak, “Cue The Symphony.”

“I’ve been in love with Nicole’s songs for many years and have always followed her career,” says Chris Isaak. “She and I are so simpatico when it comes to the music that inspires us, and she has a unique way of distilling that into her songwriting. She’s a true craftsman and an incredible singer. When it came time to start the label, she was my first thought. I’m so honored that she’s the label’s first signing, and I love ‘Drama!’”

Nicole Atkins
is an American singer-songwriter known for her evocative blend of pop soul, psychedelic rock, and 'pop noir.' Born on October 1, 1978, in Neptune City, New Jersey, Atkins began playing piano at age nine and taught herself guitar by thirteen. After high school, she studied illustration at UNC Charlotte, but quickly became involved in the local independent music scene. Her early exposure to classic soul, blues, and rock shaped her distinctive style, which draws comparisons to artists like Roy Orbison, Stevie Nicks, and Nick Cave.

Atkins moved back to New Jersey and started commuting to New York City to immerse herself in its vibrant music community. In 2004, she recorded her demo 'The Party’s Over' with drummer David Muller, which led to the formation of her band Nicole Atkins & The Sea. The group secured a residency at Piano’s in NYC and attracted attention from major labels, resulting in a bidding war won by Columbia Records. Her debut album, 'Neptune City,' was recorded in Sweden with producer Tore Johansson and released in 2007 to critical acclaim, debuting at number 20 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart. After her band The Sea disbanded in 2009, Atkins formed The Black Sea and shifted her sound further towards psychedelic rock and blues, culminating in the well-received album 'Mondo Amore' (2011). Subsequent albums like 'Rhonda Lee' and 'Italian Ice' showcased her versatility and deepened her legacy as a genre-blending artist.

Atkins eventually relocated to Nashville to join a more collaborative and supportive music community, where she continued to evolve her sound and work with a wide range of musicians. Her smoky, expressive vocals and cinematic songwriting have earned her a devoted following and respect among peers. She is recognized for her ability to transport listeners to different emotional landscapes, making her a unique figure in contemporary American music.
