„On their first four albums, the Eagles were at pains to demonstrate that they were a group of at least near-equals, each getting a share of the songwriting credits and lead vocals. But this compilation drawn from those albums, comprising the group's nine Top 40 hits plus 'Desperado,' demonstrates that this evenhandedness did not extend to singles -- as far as those go, the Eagles belong to Glenn Frey and Don Henley. The tunes are melodic, and the arrangements -- full of strummed acoustic guitars over a rock rhythm section often playing a shuffle beat, topped by tenor-dominated harmonies -- are immediately engaging. There is also a lyrical consistency to the songs, which often concern romantic uncertainties in an atmosphere soaked in intoxicants. The narrators of the songs usually seem exhausted, if not satiated, and the loping rhythms are appropriate to these impressions. zählten fast ein Jahrzehnt lang zu den erfolgreichsten amerikanischen Bands. Aus dem Nichts wurden sie zur führenden Band des Country-Rock (Synthese zwischen Pop/Rock und Country-Musik mit dem ursprünglichen Ziel einer Rückorientierung auf den Bluegrass) sowie des „California-Rock der 70er Jahre“ (Rolling Stone). Für den Musik Express wurde die Band zum „Synonym für Amerika“. Sie polierte das Western-Image auf, schrieb Songs über Tequila, Outlaws und James Dean. Hinter diesem Projekt standen Musiker, die geschickt mit Elementen wie Melancholie, Traumwelten sowie Pionier- und Aufbruchsstimmung zu hantieren wussten.

Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon und Randy Meisner spielten 1971 erstmals zusammen in der Backing Band der bekannten Sängerin Linda Ronstadt. Die vier erfahrenen Profimusiker beschlossen zusammenzubleiben, die Eagles waren geboren. Glenn Frey hatte mit Ry Cooder und J. D. Souther, der später mit den Eagles mehrere Songs schrieb, zusammengespielt. Don Henley hatte 1970 bei der texanischen Gruppe Shiloh debütiert, Bernie Leadon hatte schon mit Doug Dillard und Gene Clark gespielt und war Mitglied der Flying Burrito Brothers gewesen. Randy Meisner hatte kurzzeitig zu Poco und dann zur Band von Ricky Nelson gehört.

Die Band produzierte 1971 in England unter der Regie von Glyn Johns das erste Album, das wie die Band Eagles hieß. Es enthielt mit Take It Easy (US-Charts #12) einen Sommerhit. Außerdem wurden Witchy Woman (US-Charts #9) und Peaceful Easy Feeling (US-Charts #22) mit Erfolg ausgekoppelt: Die lockeren Country-/Westcoast-Klänge mit dem deutlichen Gitarrenprofil, der anregenden Rhythmik und dem klaren Gesang kamen beim Publikum gut an.

Die Eagles begaben sich auf ihre erste US-Tournee und widmeten sich nach deren Beendigung 1973 dem Konzeptalbum Desperado. Dieses Album zog romantische Parallelen zwischen der Doolin-Dalton-Gang, einer Verbrecherbande, die um 1890 in der Gegend von Kansas ihr Unwesen trieb, und der Geächteten-Existenz eines Rockrebellen. Die Eagles schilderten Aufstieg, Euphorie, Selbstüberschätzung und Fall eines Superstars in der Western-Mythologie und schienen damit das amerikanische Lebensgefühl exakt zu treffen. Kommerziell war das Album allerdings noch nicht der große Durchbruch; die Single-Auskopplungen Desperado, Tequila Sunrise und Outlaw Man erzielten eine geringe Resonanz.

Für die Aufnahmen zu ihrer dritten Platte On the Border verstärkten sich die Eagles mit Don Felder, der zuvor bei Flow gespielt hatte. Als neuer Produzent ersetzte Bill Szymczyk Glyn Johns. Diese beiden Änderungen animierten die Eagles zu einem „volleren, weniger raubeinigen Klang und einer erregenden Frische bei den Gitarrensoli“ (Melody Maker). „Weiche Gitarrentöne und wunderschöne Vokalpassagen“ (Musikmagazin Sounds) brachten die nicht allzu erfolgreichen Singles Already Gone (US-Charts #32) und James Dean (#77) mit sich, zwei bodenständige Rocksongs. Die Band unterstützte ihre Plattenumsätze mit ständigen Tourneeverpflichtungen, so dass On the Border schließlich die Millionengrenze überschritt. Mit der dritten Auskopplung aus diesem Album gelang den Eagles der Durchbruch: The Best of My Love erreichte den ersten Platz in der amerikanischen Hitparade und wurde für einen Grammy Award nominiert.
